New windshield wiper technique

Well, this one I had to ask about - why on earth would you have to stand up the windshield wipers off the glass? Most of the cars in a parking lot seem to have this. The explanation (not sure about this one) is that the heat can cause the rubber to leave marks on the glass. Hmmmmmm....
